Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter Book #1)

by J. K. Rowling

Fantasy, magical

1997, Bloomsbury

Harry Potter is a very unusual boy, even if he doesn't know it yet. After his parents died in a car crash that left him with an oddly shaped lightning-shaped scar, infant Harry went to live with his cruel aunt and uncle and their spoiled son. There he lives a miserable life until his eleventh birthday, when a half-giant named Hagrid busts down his door and tells him that he is a wizard and has been invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. At Hogwarts Harry makes new friends and rivals, flies brooms, learns spells, and has all kinds of odd magical adventures. But the Wizarding world is not as perfect as it seems, and Harry soon discovers that his parent's death and his unusual scar trace back to a terrible villain and a fateful war that just might not be over.

Rated 8+ for mild danger, orphaning of child, and neglect by guardians.
